Doing Business in Papakura

Doing Business in Papakura is getting easier.

Since it's establishment, the Council's Business and Promotion Unit has provided advice and information to local businesses, attracted new businesses to the District, and assisted in leading businesses through Council regulatory processes.

Our District is the smallest of the seven territorial local authorities in the Auckland region, and is unique in that it occupies a strategic position at the interface of the southernmost part of the Auckland metropolitan area bordering the city of Manukau and the Franklin District.

With an area of 126 km2 (12,600 ha), a population of 40,665 and over 3,400 businesses, the District is entering a strong growth phase. Identified as a sub-regional centre to accommodate future growth, our population is expected to double by 2050. The Council is currently planning for that growth through District Plan changes.  The key plan change currently underway is the opening up of the Hingaia Peninsula for residential and industrial purposes.

In a regional context, Papakura has many attributes that make it attractive to business.  Some of these include:

  • Direct motorway access

  • Undeveloped sites

  • Competitive land prices

  • Rail Line access

  • Large potential labour force

  • Proximity to major international and local airports

  • Proximity to three major ports

Industrial growth in the District is increasing. Areas of industrial concentration are located at Takanini, Central Papakura, Hunua and Drury.  In addition, there are two areas of quarrying within the District and the distinctive ”industrial” node at
Ardmore Airport.  Ardmore Airport accommodates specialised activities related to the aviation industry.

Key industries sectors in Papakura reflect the pattern for the Auckland region as
a whole:

  • Manufacturing

  • Construction

  • Business Services

  • Agriculture

  • Retail and Hospitality

  • Transport

  • Social Services
