Civil Defence and
Emergency Management
The Civil
Defence organisation for Papakura District is a member of the Auckland
Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group (CDEM Group).
Established
as part of the nationwide CDEM Groups throughout New Zealand, the CDEM
Groups are based on regional boundaries and bring together local
councils, emergency services, health boards and other organisations that
are involved with emergency management.
The
Auckland CDEM Group was formally established in June 2003. For more
information on the regional group and its new Plan, click
here.
Papakura
District's Civil Defence was established to bring together the resources
required to assist the police, fire and ambulance services. In a state
of emergency, these services and the Council may not be able to manage a
disaster on their own.
Disasters
can occur through natural hazards such as earthquakes, fire, floods and
volcanic eruptions, or through other hazards including chemical spills,
power failures or interruptions to our essential services, such as
water.

Civil Defence Volunteers
Volunteers
are critical to Civil Defence, as there is no full time force standing
by in times of emergency. Although the Emergency Coordination Centre is
staffed by Council and Emergency Services staff, Papakura has a number
of Civil Defence Emergency Welfare Teams comprised of volunteer members
of the community.
These
Emergency Welfare Teams are trained to open and manage Civil Defence
Centres, which could provide food, clothing and shelter to people
evacuated from their homes during an emergency. Civil Defence Centres
have been designated at the following places:
New
members are always welcome. Contact the Civil Defence Emergency
Management Officer on 09 295 1300 or
email
to discuss
how you can help your community.
