Composting
The Council is challenging our residents to make the most of their garden and kitchen rubbish through our waste minimisation programme. We're encouraging householders to put organic waste to work in the garden. In planning for a cleaner, greener future, we all need to think more carefully about what we throw away. Nearly half the rubbish each household produces every week is food waste, but it can be put to good use. You can reduce your garden and kitchen waste including home composting by using garden waste collections, taking the waste to your local transfer station, worm farming, grass-cycling and smarter gardening techniques. Composting and worm farming demonstrations Composting and worm farming helps the environment, produces nutrient-rich humus for your garden, and helps your bank balance by reducing the amount of rubbish you throw away. If you want to know more about these easy steps you can take to be a little more "green", come along to a demonstration. Create Your Own Eden composting courses - full information and dates We have a Create your own Eden brochure and $20 discount voucher available from the Council offices and Library or by contacting our Customer Services Centre on 09 295 1300. The voucher is redeemable at listed local retailers when purchasing a compost bin or worm farm. Does the Council take away my garden/kitchen waste? No. However you can arrange for garden waste to be collected. Refer to 'garden bags & bins' in the Yellow Pages. Or you can take your garden waste to the transfer station [there will be a fee]. The Council bylaws ban garden waste in weekly rubbish bags. This has been in place for over a decade to stop the harmful effects of organic waste in landfills. Schools Council also has assistance for all schools in the District. Please telephone 295 1300 to speak to an officer on how schools can reduce organic and other waste effects on our environment.
