About the
District
Papakura District Council is
one of 59 District Councils in New Zealand and one of seven territorial
local authorities covering the greater Auckland region.
Situated strategically 32km south of Auckland city, Papakura is in the
unique position of being bordered on its north side by the greater
Auckland suburbs, and on the south by some of the most striking
countryside within New Zealand.
Papakura's
southern gateway function is emphasised by its position between the Harbour and the Hunua ranges.
The size of our District is
126 sq km (or 12,600ha) with a diverse
physical environment which includes forest covered Hunua foothills,
the rolling flat plains where agricultural and horticultural
activities predominate, and the urban area abutting the Manukau Harbour and
Auckland-Hamilton motorway.
Papakura features a
broad range of rural and urban activities, which include Ardmore
Airport, a diverse equine industry (including the Karaka Horse Sales), a
major commercial and retail centre, large areas of covered flower
growing at Drury, two large quarries, substantial residential and
industrial areas, a broad range of recreational and community facilities
including an all weather athletic track of international standard, and
aquatic and leisure centre, golf course and driving range and an
entertainment and conference centre.
