Graffiti
Management
The Council
has a zero tolerance policy towards graffiti in our District and is actively working with
the Police and Neighbourhood Support to
reduce
and eliminate it. If graffiti is not removed as quickly as
possible, it encourages other taggers to do likewise. If you follow the
Three R’s,
Record,
Report,
Remove, we have a better chance to keep our District graffiti free.
To report Graffiti in the District, telephone the Council Hotline on 295
1300.
Defacing property is a
criminal offence and the Police want to catch the
offenders but they need evidence. Record the graffiti or ‘tag’ by taking
a photograph of it or drawing it. If you see the offender, write down
a description of him or her.

If your
property has graffiti, report it to the Police. They will prosecute any
offenders caught. Your photograph or drawing of the graffiti or ‘tag’
will help. Many local police stations keep ‘tag’ books holding
information to build a picture of the tags and taggers over time.
You can also report
graffiti in the District to the Council, please contact our
Customer Services Centre or telephone 09 295 1300.

The sooner
the graffiti is removed, the better the chance stopping it from
happening again. Taggers look for long-term exposure. If their efforts
are frustrated, they will stop and look elsewhere.
The earlier
graffiti is removed, the easier it is to clean it off your fence or
building. Taggers generally use dark coloured, oil-based spray paints or
felt pen markers which will stain or shadow if left too long.
