McLennan Park Masterplan
Council has proposed an
upgrade of McLennan Park. The Park is about to be extended by a hectare
on its northern boundary and with McLennan Development about to begin,
the Council believes it is timely to prepare a master plan for the
future development and use of the Park. The proposed upgrade is
contained in the draft
McLennan Park Masterplan which has been released for public comment.
Key features of the proposed
upgrade include:
Improving access and
circulation at McLennan Park by:
-
Improving site entrances –
particularly by rehabilitating the commemorative structure at the main
entrance.
-
Developing a primary path
running north-south that will link the McLennan Development to the
Town Centre.
-
Developing a pathway
network within the Park to encourage walking and cycling around the
stormwater ponds and the sports fields.
-
Constructing additional
parking facilities at the Arimu Road entrance and north of the
accommodation complex.

Providing additional active and passive recreational facilities at
McLennan Park by:
-
Developing new sports fields
utilising the northern extension of the Park.
-
Establishing an additional
cricket block/wicket within the northern expansion.
-
Constructing a comprehensive
sports club building for changing rooms, toilet facilities, and club
activities.
-
Providing a set of seats,
picnic sites, interpretive signs, and bollards.

Sustainably managing on-site stormwater and amenity improvement by:
-
Constructing a low weir to
the east of the sports fields to form a spring wetland environment with
amenity planting.
-
Planting trees with three
different characters – informal native planting around the wetland,
exotic groves in picnicking and resting areas, and exotic avenues to
support the path system.

Capital Costs:
The development plan has been prepared in consultation with the current
users of McLennan Park. The total cost to develop the Park is estimated
at $4.4 million.
The Council has budgeted $2
million in the draft Annual Plan 2008/2009 to contribute to the
development of McLennan Park. It is expected that the shortfall will be
met funding from community funding agencies and from in-kind support.

Submissions
Submissions closed 5.00pm, Friday 30 May
The Council values
hearing community opinion and has made the development plan information
