Streetlights

The Council is responsible for the placement and maintenance of street lights on public streets. If you have a problem with street or pedestrian lights not working, staying on during the day, flickering, or damaged, please tell the Council.

You can contact our Customer Service Centre or telephone 09 295 1300. Our staff will record the details of the situation. These will then be passed onto the Council's Roading Engineer, who will investigate any problems, and if necessary take remedial action.

To make sure that it’s fixed quickly, the Council needs to know as much of the following information as possible:

  1. Where is the street light? eg the house number and street name that the streetlight is outside/opposite, or any other identifying feature.

  2. What is the problem? eg insufficient light, it’s not working, a car’s hit the pole, it’s shining into my home.

Do you want to move a streetlight?

The Council is unable to remove a streetlight completely. If a light can be moved, then it can only be moved a maximum of 1 metre. In some cases, it cannot be moved at all. Please note that the cost to move a streetlight, must be borne by the person requesting the move.

All requests must be made in writing and include exact location and an explanation of why you would like it moved.

Please send your request to the:
