Trade Waste is any liquid discharged to a sewer in the course of a trade or industrial process. In the Auckland region (excluding North Shore City Council and Rodney District) trade waste control is managed by Watercare under the Auckland Regional Council's Trade Waste Bylaw and Auckland Metropolitan Drainage Act.
This waste is treated at Watercare's Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant, and needs to be monitored to ensure it is safely dealt with. Trade Waste is controlled to ensure:
- the health and safety of wastewater personnel;
- the protection of wastewater assets from damage or blockage;
- the efficient operation of wastewater treatment processes.
Because trade wastes often require a greater degree of treatment than normal domestic wastewater, trade waste customers have a direct relationship with the Auckland region's water and wastewater wholesaler, Watercare Services.
These customers are charged separately by Watercare for carrying the trade wastes from the point where they discharge from the Metrowater network to the Watercare network, and for treatment at the Mangere Treatment Plant.
