and waste minimisation where it saves on costs
What is waste?
Waste is made up of materials that people at home and work discard
because they no longer need it. The Council collects almost 11,000
tonnes of waste every year. This does not include privately collected
waste from businesses. Careful management is needed so its effect on the
environment and human health is minimal.
Sustainable waste management
Council policy is to reduce, reuse, recycle and recover waste. Some
disposal is necessary, but it is the last resort. The emphasis is on
managing waste in more sustainable ways - conserving raw
materials but still protecting the environment and public health.
Products and services are increasingly designed with reuse or recycling
in mind.
Envirosmart
The EnviroSmart programme focuses on
improving the environmental performance of businesses. The Ministry for
the Environment together with twenty-two councils in eight regions are
sponsoring EnviroSmart. Telephone Council on 295 1301 to ask more about
Envirosmart.
